Jiu Jitsu Instructor
Coach Derek Davis
Coach Derek is a black belt, and certified instructor of Pedro Sauer Gracie Jiujitsu. He earned his black belt under Professor Mark Cukro in 2024. He is a retired National Guardsman and U.S.
Army Special Forces veteran.
Coach's martial arts journey began with youth wrestling and Kenpo Karate. Through military service He learned the foundations of jiu jitsu as a student and teacher of Modern Army Combatives (MACP) and the Special Operations Combatives (SOCP) programs.
Now he teaches Pedro Sauer Gracie Jiu-jitsu, and submission grappling with a folkstyle wrestling base. Coach Derek tries to maintain self-defense and combatives as the core foundation in his style.
He is not focused on jiu jitsu as a sport, but does endeavor to continue to learn and share with his students, the vast array of modern techniques that have developed as BJJ has gained
popularity as a sport. As Coach's instructor says; “We teach the art, all the techniques, you pick the ruleset”.
We focus on takedowns as critical skills for self-defense but never lose sight of our roots, as experts in the ground submission grappling our art is famous for. Coach tries to create a
friendly environment that fosters camaraderie and shared growth. He loves this art and being part of the local upstate martial art community. "My goal is not to train copies of myself; but to impart what knowledge I can, so students will, in time, build their own jiu-jitsu, based on their own body types and physical characteristics. We want to train for life, not just for a select few years
of aggressive competition."
